THE DAY

9:00 AM

Begin at Sun Studio

Start the day with the music that made Memphis famous. Sun Studio is closely connected to the early careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, and other foundational artists in rock-and-roll, blues, and country music.
Allow about 60 to 90 minutes. If a specific guided tour time matters to you, reserve in advance.

11:00 AM

The Peabody Duck March

Head downtown to The Peabody Memphis for its famous Duck March. Arrive about 20 to 30 minutes early, especially on a busy weekend, then take a few minutes afterward to appreciate the hotel’s historic lobby.
It is a lighthearted, distinctly Memphis moment before the more substantial afternoon ahead.

12:15 PM

Memphis Barbecue Lunch

Make your first food stop Central BBQ, an approachable introduction to Memphis barbecue. Pulled pork, ribs, smoked wings, and barbecue nachos are all classic choices.
This is a good time to settle in and refuel rather than rushing through lunch. The afternoon’s museum visit deserves unhurried time.

1:30 PM

National Civil Rights Museum

Spend the afternoon at the National Civil Rights Museum, located at the Lorraine Motel. Allow at least two hours, and more if your group likes to move slowly through exhibits.
This is the emotional and historical center of the day. It adds real context and depth to a Memphis itinerary that might otherwise focus only on music and food.

4:15 PM

A Reset at the Riverfront

After the museum, take a breather with an easy walk through Tom Lee Park or along the Mississippi River. You do not need to walk the entire riverfront; this is simply a quieter pause after a full museum experience.
If the group has lower energy, take a rideshare directly to the next stop or find a nearby coffee or cocktail break downtown.

5:15 PM

The Memphis Pyramid

Make a short stop at the Memphis Pyramid. Even if shopping is not the goal, the building itself is an unusual piece of the city’s skyline, and the views can be worthwhile if time and energy allow.
This is the most flexible stop of the day. Skip it if you would rather have more time by the river, at the museum, or relaxing before dinner.

6:45 PM

Dinner at Rendezvous

For dinner, try Charlie Vergos Rendezvous, known for its Memphis dry-rub ribs and downtown, alleyway setting. It offers a different barbecue experience from lunch and gives the evening a strong sense of place.
If the wait is too long or your group would prefer something lighter, keep a downtown backup in mind rather than forcing the schedule.

8:15 PM

Beale Street After Dark

Finish the evening with a walk along Beale Street. Take in the neon, live blues, and energy of downtown Memphis; stop for a drink or a set of music if that fits the group’s mood.
There is no need to make this a late night. Even a relaxed walk through the area gives the day a fitting, music-filled finale.

WHY THIS DAY WORKS

The day starts with music history, moves naturally into downtown Memphis, and gives the afternoon real substance through the National Civil Rights Museum. The riverfront creates breathing room, and the evening closes with two unmistakably local experiences: barbecue and Beale Street.

MAKE IT YOURS

For a slower day
Choose either Sun Studio or the Pyramid, then use the extra time at the National Civil Rights Museum or the riverfront.
For a food-forward day
Skip the Pyramid and add a coffee, cocktail, dessert, or more leisurely downtown stop.
For mobility or energy needs
Use rideshares between major stops and treat the riverfront walk as optional.
For families
Plan an earlier dinner and make Beale Street a brief atmospheric walk rather than a late-night activity.
For serious music fans
Extend time at Sun Studio and shorten the Pyramid stop.

BEFORE YOU GO

- Confirm current tour times and ticket availability for Sun Studio.
- Reserve National Civil Rights Museum tickets if needed and allow ample time.
- Check the current Peabody Duck March schedule.
- Consider dinner timing or a backup restaurant, particularly on weekends.
- Save all stops in a shared map and leave buffer time for rideshares between neighborhoods.
